I
began
photographing the Sprockettes, a mini bike dance troupe from Portland OR,
in September 2006. I was inspired by the groups mission; To advocate bicycling,
promote positive body image, operate collectively, support their community,
and ‘to empower and inspire people to live out their crazy and wildest
dreams’.
For
one year I essentially became a Sprockette, attending practices, meetings
and performances. I even learned a few dances... The Sprockettes gave me
unlimited access to the inner workings of their group, and trusted me to
represent them truthfully, and thoughtfully. I am proud of this body of
work, and I hope they are too.
Inevitably, there is the question of ‘why?’, why spend an entire
year documenting a performance group? We’ve all heard something to
the effect of ‘History is written by the victors’. I would alter
that a little for the times and say that history is written by those with
power (aka money). There’s a desire on my part to preserve this piece
of radical, DIY history that will hopefully not only inform, but inspire
those that come across it.
We all follow in the footsteps of those that came before us, whether we’re
aware of it or not. There’s something very comforting though, in knowing
that another person, or group of people have walked the same path before
you. That kind of knowledge in my opinion, is the greatest power of all.
